Who is Kannan?

Born in 1927 with his birth name Jannagi Kannan was a very famous man known for his Tamil speech and literature back at the 50-70's. His parents was originated from Vellore, Tamil Nadu and brought by the Dutch in the early build-up of the plantation in the 1830's. Many of them returned back to India after the contract was done, but some of them managed to stay at BInjai, Kannan's parents is one of them. Kannan was born at Binjai, but at 1939 his parents brought him back to his hometown at India.

For some reason he decided to go back to Binjai, so at 1940 he made his trip back to Binjai.
He finished his study at MULO (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs) school Binjai in the Dutch colony age and worked at the Timang Langkat harbour as an Engineer.

At young age he had a deep passion into teaching, giving speech and making literature. He started teaching Tamil precisely at the age 18 at the year 1946. With the help of Mr Muniyandi they had around 50 students and the programs happens for several years.

Mr. Kannan passed away at 1980 because of sickness. Since then the culture of Tamil seems slowly disappear.Until now North Sumatra has the biggest population of Tamils, but the culture is not practiced properly. We hope with this program we could bring it back even though it will be not perfect as the old day.
